MySpace

Arrington posted a bit about MySpace this morning, after Imeem was banned by the News Corp. owned company:

It’s clear that MySpace isn’t happy with the fact that other services are building their business on the back of their massive user numbers – Peter Chernin, the COO of News Corp. (MySpace’s parent company) said as much late last year and specifically named YouTube, Flickr and Photobucket as services that were “really driven off the back of MySpace.”

But isn’t that what made MySpace take off in the first place? Isn’t this just a chicken-or-egg scenario?

I guess I don’t see MySpace’s frustration. Clearly, this is what people want to do with the service. People want to put third-party hosted crap on their pages. It’s like a dumbed-down Geocities. And if MySpace takes that away, some other company will swoop in and take that market from them.

I guess I could see, with YouTube offering advertising revenue to content creators in the future MySpace would not want to be forced police its pages for ads that don’t pay MySpace a dime.

My question to that would be, why is MySpace on the defensive anyway? Can’t they monetize their own service?

The end. Or is it?
